Pachinko Redesign Book Cover
This is a redesign of the New York Times Bestseller, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. This novel follows a Korean family that immigrates to Japan. A novel that shows how one’s actions spans four generations. Pachinko tells of a poor, but proud immigrant family’s struggle to survive and thrive in a homeland they never knew.
For this redesign, I wanted to represent the narratives of the different generations being presented. The first design I wanted to show the older generation by showcasing a more traditional feel. How I went about this is by using a typeface that reflected hangul calligraphy along with the illustration style being more realistic. Then, for the second design I wanted it to show the younger generation. I did this by creating a 2D illustration and for the type, I chose to use a Sans Serif typeface to showcase the digital age.
